HobbiesMy teaching experience and philosophy -
Students from primary school up to year 10.
As most of the primary schools, junior levels of secondary schools in Melbourne do not provide regular and sufficient maths homework for students to consolidate their learning. I found that many of primary students fail to build a solid understanding and foundation for mathematics before they enter secondary school. It is often easy for the students with weaker maths ability to fall behind once they start year 7 (or higher year levels) due to the requirement of relatively stronger mathematical problem solving understanding and skills.
I found that by going through past and current course materials and give them regular quizzes to assess their understanding and provide them regular homework to consolidate their learning would definitely help them to be better equipped for VCE maths.
Due to the quick introduction of sheer number of new topics in VCE level mathematics, lots of
students often fall behind very quickly, even the stronger students sometimes find it challenging. I find that by explaining and ensuring all learning objectives are well understood by the student, they can perform their best for their exams.
English/ English as A Second Language
Due to the little amount of spelling / reading / writing focus lessons provided by primary schools, I found that many students are often incapable of recognizing or understanding some very common words when they appear in passages.
My teaching approach is to read through some very good reading practice that I have collected over these 2 years with the students and guide them to highlight answers in the passage as they go through the questions. I also require my students to note down some useful words while they are reading and use those words to write up sentences. This way their English ability in all 3 aspects can be trained and improved.
Many of the foreign language background students find it difficult to obtain good marks in English/ESL tests (SACs). This is mainly due to their shallow understanding of the texts and insufficient practice of essay writing. I always provide my students with in-depth explanation and analysis of each character and themes in texts and teach them to approach exam essay topics in multiple ways. Weekly essay is essential if the students are to learn with me as students can in fact discover many more things about the books as they write more.
