Experience

Hi, my name is Tim and I am a professional Chemical Engineer, qualified Mathematician and Chemist. I have over 8 years experience in private tutoring and teaching at local tuition centres. I am currently coaching high school VCE and university students in: -Chemistry (VCE) -Maths (Year 7-10) -Maths Methods -Further Maths -General Science Many of my students perform well in school and my senior students achieve great marks in VCE and in University (I have attached some of my past students' results to this ad). The tuition fee includes access to learning materials and practice exams. I understand that every student learns differently so my teaching is personalised and I always use easy to understand analogies to explain concepts. Sessions are interactive and I ensure that students are engaged, by prompting students with hints to that lead to the solution rather than just ‘showing them the answer.’ This way, students tend to retain the knowledge better as they are required to go through the thought process. Additional material and homework is always available/provided and I tune the materials to the students' requirements My teaching philosophy: General: Working out is very important and I emphasize the importance of showing the trail of workings rather than just ‘getting the answer.’ Many teachers also allocate marks to working out so it is important to show the required steps to fulfill the requirements of the question. This way you can minimize the damage of ‘silly mistakes’ as the examiner can follow the thought process of the student and allocate method/consequential marks. Maths Year 7-10 I believe all students can do well in mathematics and it is merely a combination of: • Interest • Guidance • Practice I always try to generate interest in the students to providing real examples of where mathematical techniques can be applied to daily life namely, finance, construction and engineering. I have worked with students from varying abilities in mathematics from those who are struggling to those who perform reasonably and require guidance to those who are looking for a challenge. For students who struggle with mathematical concepts I have assisted them to improve their marks by breaking down problems into simple step by step solutions. I lead students through: • Identification of the problem • Identification of relevant mathematical technique • Practicing the steps of the technique For students that want to get ahead, I have a full set of resources to facilitate accelerated learning complete with practice test papers and examination to make sure that learning is focused and the progress/outcomes can be measurable. VCE Maths Unlike years 7 to 10 the VCE mathematics curriculum is much more extensive and covers more material in a short period of time (Feb-Oct). This can be particularly stressful for students coming in from year 10 who are not used to the workload and the pace at which topics are presented causing them to fall behind. My sessions are focused on strengthening the students’ skills giving them a good foundation to apply their knowledge to solve application questions as well as building confidence in tests and exams. I achieve this by providing exam style practice problems and trial examinations for my students so that there are ‘no surprises’ when they sit their final exams. VCE Chemistry Based on feedback from students and personal experience, Chemistry is taught in a fragmented approach in schools leaving many students confused with the subject. As the assessments are based on understanding and application of the principles, students often perform poorly in tests are left feeling that ‘it is just too hard’ or have ‘…no idea what chemistry is about.’ When I present topics in chemistry, I relate the concepts to examples in everyday life so that students and can develop an interest and an appreciation for the subject. Learning is also supported by my teaching materials and notes which include sample SACs/tests and examination papers which gives students the opportunity for students to perform their best in the final exams.
