Private tutor in Melbourne, Australia

Education

I studied at the University High School from years 7 to 8. I was then admitted into the Acceleration Program and studied at Melbourne Grammar School from years 9 to 12, completing my VCE with an ATAR of 99.35 and a humble 47 for English and 43 for Maths Methods. I also undertook IB Chinese SL, which scaled to 51. I'm currently undertaking my Bachelor of Biomedicine studies at The University of Melbourne.

Experience

I tutored professionally for one year when I was at University High School. I'm currently also a Sponsorship Officer at the Melbourne University Health Initiative's Material Aids Program, which aims to deliver medical equipment to under-resourced healthcare institutions in the developing world. I make a great tutor because it gives me great joy when teaching other people, and I feel myself thriving in environments where I am given great responsibility. There is no better feeling than seeing your students develop confidence and get well-equipped with the skills they need to pursue their academic endeavours.

Hobbies

Apart from taking a keen interest in sports such as table-tennis, I feel that one of the greatest qualities about me that makes me such a competent tutor would be how I love thinking. I love to reflect on my experiences which have challenged me, experiences which include my VCE journey, and find solutions to complex problems which are not solely related to the subject itself, but also to the approach to academics overall. Time and time again, I see my peers going to tutors who, although may have great knowledge, struggle to pass it on in a way which allows students to utilise it effectively. This is where my teaching philosophy differs from the rest. For example, as a specialist VCE English tutor, I don't believe in teaching the texts themselves, as day school teachers do a more than competent job to incite thought. However, that is not to say that I will not provide any supplementary material in relation to my student's text. It is just not my primary focus, as I want to be able to teach aspects day school teachers do not have the time to teach in class, and stress finer details which will separate my students from the rest of the pack. My aim is to teach my students knowledge day school teachers do not teach, so that they strive to do better and push themselves to go further. My lessons will be structured as so: 1) Review and elaborate on comments from set homework, which I have already marked for the session. 2) Go over a mini-exercise which focusses on the errors made in the set homework. 3) Introduce a new topic/reinforce concepts from old topics from which the focus of the session will be on. 4) Another will be done, relevant to the material taught this lesson. Feedback will then be promptly provided. Although this is how I generally like to structure my lessons, I understand that each individual student has their own fortes and weaknesses. Thus, lessons will also be tailored to each student, relative to their needs and wants.
