Education

I studied for my Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Studies at the University of Birmingham from 2010-2014 and graduated with First Class Honours (the highest grade) with a distinction in spoken Spanish.

Experience

Whilst at the University of Birmingham I offered Spanish tutoring to A-Level (16-18-year-olds) students at the nearby secondary school, helping them work towards their final oral, written, and listening exams. In my final year of university, I also assisted university students in their lower years with their Spanish studies. Since leaving my secondary school in 2010 I have regularly returned to assist in Spanish classes and to give talks on my experiences of living in other countries and learning Spanish, as well as teaching After graduating I spent a year teaching English as a second language in a Spanish secondary school in Galicia, Spain. I worked in the school teaching English to young students, tailoring lessons to the level of each class or individual students from the ages of 12 to adult. Outside of school, I had three private classes on a weekly basis with students who were working towards taking their Cambridge English Language Assessments - all students ultimately passed their exams. A few months after this I spent 3 months volunteering in Bolivia, South America, as part of the British government's International Citizen Service program. Living in a small Andean village I acted as an interpreter and translator between the Spanish and non-Spanish speaking members of our team whilst also teaching English to local students. Resources were limited, often just to a paper and pen, teaching in a half-built local hospital, requiring some outside-the-box thinking but nonetheless classes were tailored to emphasize speaking and to be fun, aiming to get all students involved in the class, regardless of their level. Whilst at the University of Birmingham, I worked for the Modern Languages Department, giving tours and answering the questions of Spanish-speaking foreign students and their families about university life and the course in general. I hold a C1 DELE (Diplomas de Espanol como Lengua Extranjera) Certification - an official qualification certifying levels of competence and command of the Spanish language, issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education.
