VCE English ..
Private tutor in Melbourne, Australia
Education
I have a BA in Philosophy (Hons) from Deakin University and an MTS in Theology from Harvard University. I also have an MA in English literature, an MPhil in English literature, and a Ph.D. in English literature, all from Columbia University.
Experience
I am a VCE Year 12 specialist English tutor and have received very positive feedback from the parents of some of my students. I provide one-on-one tutoring to Year 12 VCE English and VCE literature students, from various Melbourne private and public schools, regional schools, including select entry schools, as well as those students studying via distance education. My past VCE students have consistently gained impressive study score results, both exceeding initial personal expectations and helping to facilitate ATAR scores for entrance into their preferred university courses. The weekly private tutoring I provide helps VCE students to read and understand the various literary and other texts under study, assisting them to find their own voices in the analytic, persuasive written and oral, literary, and creative writing required, for both the SACs and the final exam. The organization of private lessons is individualized, based directly on each student's specific needs, following the VCE class curriculum as laid out by the student's school, SAC due dates, practice, official trial, and final exams. My approach to Year 12 English studies aims not only to take into account present challenges or difficulties but also to build on each student's academic and personal strengths, increasing confidence as well as skills over the course of the year. As a highly qualified and experienced tutor, I have a comprehensive understanding of the present VCE English and literature courses and their requirements. By maintaining a detailed knowledge of the VCE literary texts, including secondary support materials produced by VATE (Victorian Association of Teachers of English), I am able to engage students in ways that radically improve their understanding and extend their written work. I have a Ph.D. in English Literature and broad experience teaching writing and literature to students of all ages and of all ability and confidence levels. I am widely experienced and enjoy working with a range of student abilities, from students who excel at written work but need to take their marks to a higher level to meet elite course admission scores, to those students who are struggling to meet minimum English requirements, as well as those who suffer distress and anxiety about essay writing, especially under SAC and exam conditions. From my extensive experience over the past 4 years tutoring both in-person and online VCE English students, I have found that online tuition yields exactly the same positive outcomes as face-to-face tuition, but with a range of additional benefits for students. I tutor students who do Skype sessions from both school - in the library, during free periods, or immediately after school - and from home, on weekday afternoons/evenings, and weekends. Without the extra burden of travel time associated with in-person tuition away from home, students are able to conserve one of their most valuable resources in Year 12: time. Skype sessions mean extra time for students and parents, not just for study, but also for rest, exercise and relaxation. Skype sessions also allow students with significant extracurricular commitments and school leadership responsibilities the time to simultaneously pursue their academic goals. The exchange of essays and feedback works in exactly the same way for online tutoring sessions as in-person sessions, and this is the same regardless of whether students' practice essays are typed or handwritten.
