Abstract: This ethnographic study seeks to develop a clearer picture of the experiences of Airbnb hosts in inner city Melbourne, in the cultural context termed late-modernity. Employing practice theory as a conceptual lens, this study interrogates the influence hosting Airbnbs has on one's construction, maintenance and performance of identity, as well as the ability of Airbnb to foster a sense of community. It will be argued that as homes are the places where people establish their sense of ontological security and therefore their lifestyles, highly rated Airbnb hosts essentially commodify their lifestyles by putting their homes up on Airbnb. Experience
I am currently a Design Researcher at Intrepid Group, where I conduct ethnographic user experience and customer experience research. Formerly I was Ministerial Adviser to Ben Carroll MP, Victorian Minister for Corrections, Crime Prevention, Youth Justice and Victim Support. I was also a Ministerial Adviser to Minister Carroll in his capacity as the Victorian Minister for Industry and Employment. Before my turn in State Politics I was a Speechwriter and Electorate Officer for the Federal Opposition Whip, Joanne Ryan MP. While studying I founded a tutoring business and tutored dozens of high school humanities and English students. During the summer you can almost certainly find me at the cricket. I've also got the travel bug, I love to get away and experience new things whenever I can. I'd take a mountain hike over a walk on the beach all things being equal. I spend most of my spare time, reading, listening to music or falling into rabbit holes on YouTube.
