Private tutor in Melbourne, Australia

Education

I have a Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne. I also have a Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne, with honors, and a Bachelor of Biomedical Science from the University of Melbourne. In 2002, I earned an international baccalaureate from St. Leonard's College.

Experience

I am available to tutor VCE and IB chemistry and biology and all years of junior science. I am adept at helping students who are struggling to learn outside of the traditional classroom setting. I have more than 15 years of experience tutoring all levels of VCE, IB, and undergraduate students. In particular, I have a strong background in biology and chemistry. I am an author on the new Cambridge VCE Units 1-4 Biology textbooks, which have been released for the new study design. This presents a unique opportunity to get tutoring from one of the people that potentially wrote the book that you are using in class! I currently run my own science communication company, specializing in translating complex medical research into an easy-to-understand language for people living with chronic health conditions. The skills that underpin this business are also critical in tutoring, where it is all about simplifying difficult concepts and making them more accessible for students. I have been a senior tutor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Melbourne and served as the practical coordinator for a Bachelor of Biomedicine. I have also worked for many years as a senior demonstrator at the University of Melbourne in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. During this time, I taught students the exciting ways that chemistry and biology interact in living organisms. I specialize in second and third-year biochemistry practical classes and those for the Bachelor of Biomedicine. I have a strong belief in personalizing lessons to suit the needs of each student. I believe in building mutual respect and encouraging students to feel confident in speaking up during sessions. I tutor all levels of secondary school chemistry and biology. I have experience tutoring many subjects at the University of Melbourne, and I am very familiar with the course content. I have tutored CHEM10007 Fundamentals of Chemistry, CHEM10006 Chemistry for Biomedicine, CHEM10004 Chemistry 2, CHEM10003 Chemistry 1, and BCMB20002 Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I can also tutor subjects from other universities at all undergraduate year levels.

Hobbies

Science communication, sport, movies. As mentioned above, I run my own science communication company called MStranslate. You can find us online for examples of how I use my ability to communicate complex research in a fashion that is easy for the general public to understand. I think it is also worth students seeing alternative career pathways that may lead from undertaking science subjects, and am always happy to discuss this with them as well.
