Private tutor in Melbourne, Australia

Education

Masters Degree in Immunology with First Class Honours at the University of Glasgow - graduated July 2014 Now studying my PhD at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in East Melbourne, enrolled through the University of Melbourne.

Experience

I have had plenty of experience in tutoring, although never in a professional capacity as such. For example, during high school I was part of the "Senior Pupil Helper Scheme" - therefore I spent my final 2 years in high school teaching younger (1st and 2nd year) students in French, Biology and Chemistry. At university, I organised various study groups in which my fellow classmates and I would come together to discuss particular topics we were having difficulty with and in this way we could teach each other. Finally, as the eldest sibling in my family, I have spent hours teaching my younger brother and sister (and sometimes their friends!) when they have been struggling to grasp particular concepts. In terms of test scores, I believe assessments are slightly different in Scotland compared to Australia. However, suffice it to say that since high school, I have won numerous prizes for outstanding academic achievement. In high school, I was awarded prizes for attaining the highest grades in the following subjects: Higher (Year 11/12) Human Biology, Higher Chemistry and Higher French. I was also awarded a prize for my work in the senior pupil helper scheme. At university, I graduated in the top 10% of my graduating class and was awarded the "Fyfe and Arthritis Campaign Prize - awarded to the most outstanding student in the Msci Immunology course". I was also thrilled to have made the "Dean's List", again in recognition of my academic achievement. I would like to be a tutor as I believe it is invaluable life experience and it can be very rewarding. I hope to have my own lab some day therefore any experience I can gain in teaching now will pay dividends when it comes time to pass my knowledge to others. I have always been very passionate about learning and I am happy to pass on this enthusiasm to others. Sometimes doing well in a subject comes from having a great teacher. I am very aware of this therefore I try to relate to each person I tutor and tailor my lessons as such to the individual to make sure they get the most out of our time together. For example, it is a well known fact that some people absorb information preferentially in a pictorial format, whereas others prefer other methods. Getting to know the student is therefore pivotal in understanding how they would best learn from me.

Hobbies

Unsurprisingly perhaps, my number 1 pass time is reading. Other than that, I am a very keen swimmer and I love to go for long walks in this glorious Australian sunshine (a novelty for me coming from Scotland!). I also enjoy playing board games and going to the cinema - I am a massive movie buff! I have also recently taken up cycling and I am enjoying learning how to ride again. My interests primarily focus on learning as much as I can about the immune system and harnessing this knowledge to target and treat cancer. Like most families, my own has been touched with cancer considerably therefore from a young age I knew I would dedicate my life to the effort in eradicating this disease. Please do not hesistate to contact me if you have any further questions!
