Mark B.
Private tutor in Melbourne, Australia
Education
I am currently undergoing my Ph.D. in Economics, Finance, and Marketing at RMIT University, but a majority of my education is based on graphic design and creative direction. I obtained my Bachelor's in Science in Graphic Design from the Art Institute in 2008, and my Master of Design with Honours from UNSW in Sydney in 2011.
Experience
I have a passion for teaching and education, which is largely why I have found myself in pursuit of higher education and academia over the years. Throughout my career, I have worked in numerous areas within the design field, including freelance, in-house, and agency environments around the world, including the USA, Australia, and Qatar in the Middle East. This has given me the unique opportunity to observe and experience many different cultures and forms of design. Moreover, I have worked as a studio tutor for media students at the UNSW Art and Design in Paddington, as well as a desktop publishing instructor within the Business Administration program at Simpson University in Redding. I am proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, and use them almost every day for my professional work. I also have three years of managerial experience within the academic environment as an in-house creative lead, responsible for overseeing the institutional brand and developing all outbound print and marketing materials for the university. Within this role, I had the opportunity to work with numerous student interns and provide supervision and guidance in the realms of desktop publishing, graphic design, social media, advertising, marketing communication, and print production. My objective as an educator and tutor is to foster creative learning, ingenuity, and thought in a way that not only prepares but ignites passion in students for their chosen design field. I want students to understand and appreciate the value of what they are learning by highlighting the curriculum's relevance and unique application to their industry. My goal is to make course material relevant and engaging for students, allowing them to cultivate a genuine interest in the subject matter at hand. In doing so, I believe students become more absorbed in their assignments. This passion-inspired focus leads to higher retention than mere grade consciousness. I believe these objectives can be achieved through the student-tutor dialogue and interaction, as this is where ideas can be questioned, challenged, and discussed. I feel this approach can assist greatly in promoting critical thinking and problem solving within the content of any course.
