I have completed an Associate Diploma of Music Australia (piano) from the University of Melbourne with Distinction. I participated in the Year 12 Berthe Mouchette Competition at Alliance Francaise de Melbourne, winning three first prizes. I completed a Victorian Certificate of Education with a grade of 99.95 and three premier awards. I have also gone on to complete an Advanced Certificate of Italian as a Foreign Language (Level C1) from the Universita  per Stranieri di Siena in Italy. I have previously achieved perfect scores in Latin grammar and Greek language from the Universita  di Bologna, Italy. In addition to all of this, I have completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics from the University of Melbourne, graduating with First-Class Honors and an average of 94.75, as well as eight awards, including a 100% scholarship from the Chancellor.

Experience

Hello! I'm Tim, an enthusiastic language learner, and teacher. I'm especially keen to pass on my knowledge of Latin. I have been teaching languages and mathematics to students of primary, secondary, and post-school age for six years, both as a private tutor and a classroom teacher. I am currently employed at the Center for Adult Education teaching languages to students of a wide range of ages. I have many teaching resources at hand, including 16 practice examinations which I have written for the 2019 VCAA Latin syllabus. The Latin language has fascinated me since I began studying it in high school. Writers in the Latin language tended not to spell out all their ideas explicitly, instead making us infer or guess what they meant. On the other hand, Latin also makes some distinctions that we do not explicitly draw in English. These differences between English and Latin make it very intimidating for new learners. I hope to demystify Latin and demonstrate how easy and enjoyable Latin can be for everyone. Some of my most astute students have been those who had been labeled as remedial by their school teachers, as well as those who had feared that they were too old to master another language. All human brains have extraordinary capacities. The fact that conventional methods do not always fill these capacities does not mean that such brainpower should be ignored. It is precisely the goal of my private tuition to fit the method to the brain of the student. With all those students who feel overwhelmed by the demands of their studies, and by the toxic environment of competition in which we live, I stand in solidarity. I have often felt this way. I have also been afflicted with numerous medical problems, which have added to the stress of school and university. This is why I make it my priority as a tutor to make my students' lives simpler and happier. Tutorials are a means of building students' confidence, helping them to get on top of their academic work, allowing their minds to escape the worries of existence, and expanding their imaginative and critical powers. Most importantly, tutorials are an opportunity for the student to make a friend who is more advanced in the discipline and who can show them how to pursue their particular interests.

Hobbies

I like maths and enjoy volunteering as a maths tutor. I’m also interested in modern languages, and am studying Hebrew and Russian. Most of all, I love music, especially dramatic and cinematic music which I can enjoy in front of the TV with my mates and family. Languages and music have piqued my interest in foreign cultures and developed in me the sometimes irreverent habit of imitating foreign accents. I’m hoping next to explore the culture and music of Israel, and would welcome advice on how to effect a convincing Israeli accent in Hebrew.
