Education

I received my Bachelor of Arts in fine arts with painting and drawing majors, from the National Art School Sydney. I received my Master of Arts in art therapy, from La Trobe University Melbourne.

Experience

I have experience as an artist working for myself creating oil paintings and charcoal drawings inspired by the Australian landscape and rainforest. I am passionate about the artistic process and the technical skills involved in drawing. I received a high distinction for drawing and a distinction for painting from the National Art School. My drawings have been included in the prestigious John Olsen Life Drawing Prize and were selected for the National Art School Archive Collection. I was part of a function at The Art Gallery of New South Wales life drawing in front of live audiences. I received acceptance to attend the prestigious New York Studio School in July this year for a drawing marathon for ten days. I am familiar with educating people of all ages. I worked as an educator for Sculpture by the Sea. In this role, I combined my skills in contemporary art, art-making, education, therapeutic engagement of young people, building relationships, developing and researching programs, collaboration, and working autonomously. I was discussing prominent Australian and International artists' works and meeting with artists as part of my research. I was able to discuss the artists' artistic processes and materials with tour groups as well as other patrons. I helped facilitate workshops with established artists and assist the participants in making their own works. I devised an art therapy program called art explore for young people as an art therapy intern at the Box Hill AIPU. This was a weekly group of seven to ten people occurring over eleven months. This required having a good understanding of young people developmentally, youth and mental health, trends beyond the mainstream, and unconventional ways of engagement. This program took into account the specific needs of youth with mental health concerns, developmental neuroscience, and issues specifically relevant to young people such as self-esteem, self-efficacy, and empowerment through art-making. Each week the groups varied as patient stays were brief, coming into hospital experiencing a mental health crisis and staying for psychological containment and safety. The art therapy group provided a safe place for patients to take their minds off their worries, feel connected to others and if appropriate discuss their experiences. This was a highly unpredictable group and required responsiveness to the groups' needs on the day. Whilst I had a structured plan of activities and goals it was not always possible to carry out and I needed to be flexible and open to change.
