Education
I completed a bachelor's with distinction at Monash University, where I majored in literary studies and minored in Italian studies. I also took courses in linguistics, Chinese literature, Chinese history, sociology, and French. I am currently pursuing a master's in applied linguistics at The University of Melbourne. The subjects I am studying include phonetics and phonology, syntax, semantics, and World English.
Experience
I am a native Cantonese speaker. I also speak native-like Mandarin. I can write in both Simplified and Traditional Chinese. I have experience tutoring Cantonese and Mandarin to Australian and American English speakers at different levels. I enjoy teaching foreigners Cantonese and Mandarin because I would like to share my culture with people around the world since language is a vehicle of culture. My current major is applied linguistics, which focuses on applying linguistics knowledge in society, such as language teaching. The linguistics knowledge I learned is beneficial to my teaching. For example, knowledge in phonetics helps me to know why some sounds in Cantonese and Mandarin are difficult for English-speakers, and, therefore, I can come up with some methods to help the students. I tutor Cantonese and Mandarin at all levels, from beginner to advanced. The focus of our lessons is chosen by you to fit your interests and goals. It can be speaking, writing, or grammar. In addition, I also tutor Chinese subjects at a university level. Apart from languages, I am happy to teach Modern Chinese literature. Chinese literature is my second hobby, following linguistics. I am particularly interested in teaching Modern Chinese fiction.
